Loctite vs Gorilla Glue

Loctite and Gorilla Glue are the two heavyweights in the glue industry. Both these companies have been around for a very long time. And both companies make excellent glue.

However, Loctite and Gorilla Glue have their strengths and weaknesses. It’s difficult, some say impossible, for one company to manufacture a top of the line glue in every single category.

That’s where this article enters the picture. We will cover the best glue for the most common uses. You will have no issue finding a glue that works best for your task at hand.

Loctite vs Gorilla Glue

There are some fairly large differences between Loctite and Gorilla Glue. Most of these differences stem from the origins of each company.

Loctite was founded in 1956 with a focus on threadlocking adhesives. Since then, Loctite has expanded into a wide variety of niches that serve both industrial and hobby uses in the adhesives and sealant markets.

Gorilla Glue has a completely different origin. The company is relatively new being founded in 1994 to sell a polyurethane glue designed for wood and the hobby market. Of course, Gorilla Glue has expanded into other areas in the adhesive industry, but there focus still remains polyurethane glue for use on wood.

This next section will explicitly examine the best brand for the most common uses.

Best Standard Glue

Both companies make excellent standard glue. However, Gorilla Glue eeks out ahead of Loctite because Gorilla Glue is waterproof.

This means it can withstand water without falling apart like a water-resistant glue.

Gorilla Glue does not work nearly as well on plastic as Loctite, but a waterproof glue is a huge advantage that earns it the top spot.

Verdict: Original Gorilla Glue

Best Glue for Wood

The best glue for wood is Gorilla Glue, and it’s not even a fair competition.

Remember, Gorilla Glue first product was wood glue, which helps to explain why the glue works so great.

Gorilla Glue won’t stain wood, dries clear, and is much stronger than Loctite glue when used on wood.

Just get Gorilla Glue if you need glue for any wood bonding.

Verdict: Gorilla Wood Glue

Best Glue for Plastic

Most glues are pretty bad for use on plastic. They have a tendency to weaken after a few days and sometimes crack the plastic!

That’s not very useful.

With that in mind, Loctite is the best glue for plastic. We recommend a cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy if you want to use glue on plastic. With Loctite, you’ll be able to bond plastic tubing, containers, lego blocks, and more!

Remember, Loclite was originally designed for use on plastic, so they have plenty of experience manufacturing glue specifically for use on plastic.

Verdict: Try the Loctite Heavy Duty Epoxy for a good epoxy for plastic.

  • Heavy Duty: High-strength adhesive for use on a wide range of materials for a permanent bond after only one application

Best Glue/Epoxy for Metal

Loctite and Gorilla Glue both make an excellent glue for bonding metal. You really can’t go wrong with either choice for metal.

However, Loctite has a larger variety of glues and epoxies available for every type of metal application. If you’re looking for a specific glue for use on metal, then Loctite is the brand for you.

Verdict: Loctite for the variety, but both brands have products that work great.

Best Threadlocker

A threadlocker is an adhesive placed on a fastener, such as screws and bolts, to prevent loosening. Threadlockers are most often used in industrial uses where fasteners must withstand a large amount of pressure.

Anyway, Locktite makes the absolute best threadlocking adhesives on the market. Not only do they make the best threadlocking adhesives, but Loctite also makes the most amount of different threadlocking adhesives.

This means that you can find a threadlocker for practically any use.

Now, Gorilla Glue does have a few threadlockers that work for light use, but you really should go with Loctite if you need a threadlocker.

Verdict: Loctite

Best Epoxy

poxies are a polymer used for bonding materials together. Unfortunately, no epoxy is waterproof, but they make up for this with there ability to strongly bond to almost anything.

In terms of the best epoxy, the Gorilla Glue Epoxy makes the most sense as it has a slightly stronger bond and easier application.

However, Gorilla Glue has a very narrow selection of epoxies – one to be exact.

On the other hand, Loctite has dozens of epoxies available for a huge amount of different applications.

Verdict: GorillaWeld for a general use epoxy. Loctite for a specific use.

Loctite Super Glue vs. Gorilla Super Glue

Gorilla Super Glue

A lot of people confuse Gorilla Super Glue with the original Super Glue. Yes, they are two separate brands of glue.

Anyway, Gorilla Super Glue is the best general-purpose glue on the market. It dries in under 30 seconds, can be used on most materials, dries clear, and it has a cap that doesn’t clog.

In addition to that, it’s incredibly strong with a strength rating of 3200PSI – that’s really strong.

What more could you ask for in a super glue?

Also, a non-clogging cap is an extremely important feature of super glue. Without it, you basically have a single-use glue rather than a multi-use glue.

Note: Don’t use this on polyethylene or polypropylene plastic – it won’t work.

Loctite Ultra Gel Super Glue

Loctite Super Glue is good super glue. It’s strong (rated to 3100PSI), versatile, and dries clear.

The best feature about Loctite super glue is that it comes in a gel. This might not sound like much, but it really does help when applying it. You don’t have to worry about glue spilling everywhere and making a mess.

As mentioned earlier, Loctite glue tends to work better with plastic than Gorilla Glue, and this glue is no exception. It works great with plastic, wood, glass, and even metal.

The only downside with this glue is that it’s water-resistant and not waterproof. In other words, it won’t last long in the rain.

Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control, Clear Superglue For Plastic, Wood, Metal, Crafts, & Repair, Cyanoacrylate Adhesive Instant Glue, Quick Dry - 0.14 fl oz Bottle, Pack Of 6
  • Rubber Toughened: Loctite’s most durable cyanoacrylate super glue formula resists water, impact, shock, vibration for materials subject to daily use and harsh conditions

Different Types of Gorilla Glue

Gorilla Glue has a huge selection of different glues and epoxies available. This section will cover some of the more popular products that Gorilla Glue has to offer.

Gorilla Glue Original

Gorilla Glue Original is the product that placed Gorilla Glue on the map. It’s an excellent glue for most applications since it’s waterproof and expands to approximately 3 times its normal size when fully dried.

Of course, Gorilla Glue Original excels for wood, which makes it great for a hobbyist or carpenter. Don’t let that fool you, though. This glue works great for a huge amount of different uses, especially because it’s waterproof.

In fact, Gorilla Glue Original is the glue we recommend for general use for the reasons listed above.

One last thing, Gorilla Glue Original does not dry clear – it dries in a yellowish color. If you need clear glue, then purchase Gorilla Clear Glue. It’s the same glue, but it dries clear.

  • Incredibly strong and versatile; The leading multi-purpose waterproof glue

Gorilla Wood Glue

Do you use your glue for a large amount of woodworking?

If you do, then Gorilla Wood Glue is the best glue for you. This glue was designed by carpenters for carpenters. So, what makes it so great?

First, this is a water-resistant glue, which means you can use it indoors or outdoors. That isn’t a common feature for wood glues, so it’s not to see.

Other than that, Gorilla Wood glue is easy to apply, dries in about 20 minutes, and has a high expansion.

You can even use this as a general-purpose glue, but keep in mind that it does dry in a beige/yellow color. There are better options for general-purpose glue, though.

Gorillaweld (Epoxy)

As the name implies, Gorillaweld is an epoxy that can bond metal materials together.

Gorilla Glue isn’t exaggerating when they claim “weld,” either. This epoxy is extremely strong with a strength of 4250PSI. It’s also a permanent bond – you will struggle to remove this.

In addition to that, Gorillaweld is waterproof and can be used on most materials. It dries a dark grey a color, which is actually a benefit when bonding metal as it makes it easy to see the bond.

Keep in mind that Gorillaweld takes about 10 minutes to dry. 10 minutes might sound annoying, but it’s actually convenient when bonding metal.

Gorilla Glue Sticks

Are you tired of using cheap glue that never works well in your glue gun?

If you are tired of that, then Gorilla Glue Sticks are your solution. That’s right, Gorilla Glue makes glue sticks for a glue gun.

These sticks have the same strength as other Gorilla products. On top of that, the glue in the sticks can be used on metal and glass

All in all, these are the glue sticks you want to use if you have a glue gun. Don’t even bother with the cheap glue sticks – they don’t work well.

Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive

Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive is great for DIY purposes or even commercial uses. We rank this as the strongest construction adhesive on the market. It’s also one of the fastest drying adhesives as it only takes about 30 seconds to dry.

Remember, this is a construction adhesive not a glue. This means you need a caulk gun to apply it and it will dry white. We recommend this for any type of construction purpose (tiling, bathroom repairs, etc.) or heavy-duty work where the adhesive can remain out of sight.

Different Types of Loctite Glue

Loctite also makes their own line of glues. As mentioned earlier, Loctite has far more options for threadlockers and Loctite glue tends to work better for bonding plastic.

Here is a short description of the different types of glues, and the most popular threadlockers, from Loctite.

Loctite Heavy-Duty Epoxy

The Loctite Heavy-Duty Epoxy is slightly weaker than Gorillaweld. However, it costs slightly less for about the same benefits.

Anyway, it has all the usual features you would expect in an epoxy. It doesn’t crack, shrink, and sets in about five minutes. It can also bond just about everything.

We admit that it doesn’t beat Gorillaweld, but it works about the same. You really can’t go wrong with either choice.

  • Heavy Duty: High-strength adhesive for use on a wide range of materials for a permanent bond after only one application

Loctite GO2

Loctite GO2 is a clear-drying glue made from polyurethane and polyoxysilane. This makes it a very durable, versatile, and flexible glue.

However, many reviewers do not understand the purpose of GO2 glue. This is not a general-purpose super glue

It is thicker and more flexible than standard super glue, which makes it great to use in an area prone to vibrations. The extra thickness also means you will have to let this glue set for about 24 hours.

Don’t let that scare you, this glue is excellent at its fairly narrow intended use – bonded areas that will experience vibrations.

Loctite GO2 Glue, 3.5 oz
  • Extra Durable and Versatile: Developed with Loctite industrial expertise to mix strength of polyurethane and versatility of polyoxysilane

loctite vs gorilla glue

Loctite 242

Loctite 242 is the best threadlocker for general use with bolts, screws, and other fasteners under ¾” long. It has a strength and viscosity rating of medium.

Unfortunately, Loctite 242 does not have oil resistance. If you need an oil-resistant threadlocker, then you should purchase Loctite 243. It’s the same as 242, but with oil resistance and a little extra strength.

Loctite Red 271

Loctite Red 271 is a heavy-duty threadlocker. It has a high-strength and high viscosity, which makes it perfect for large fasteners. We recommend using this with fasteners up to 1” long.

As for temperature range, it has a safe range of -65℉ to 300℉.

Removal involves heating up the fastener to 450℉ for five minutes and then removing it with hand tools. This threadlocker shouldn’t fail for all but the toughest uses.

Loctite Threadlocker Red 271 - Permanent Thread Lock Glue for Nuts, Bolts, & Fasteners, High Strength Screw Glue to Prevent Loosening & Corrosion - 6 ml, 1 Pack
  • Lock and Seal Fasteners: Prevents loosening of metal fasteners caused by vibration on engines, machinery, and vehicles

Verdict

That about covers it for the Gorilla Glue vs. Loctite discussion that often pops up in the DIY niche. So, which is better: Gorilla Glue or Loctite?

Both brands are excellent at what they’re trying to do with there products. In fact, they only compete with each other on a few products.

Loctite makes excellent threadlockers and has glue that works great on plastic. If you need a threadlocker, then you will want to buy a Loctite brand. They really do have a threadlocker for every possible scenario.

Gorilla Glue, on the other hand, focuses on producing glue that works great on wood. They have branched out into other areas over the years, but wood glue still remains the strongest, and most well-known, product line from Gorilla Glue.
